General presentation
The teaching of economics is part of a long tradition at ESSEC that dates back to the institution's creation in 1907. With its 20 professors (in Cergy and Singapore) strongly committed to research, the Department of Economics offers a wide range of courses, the quality of which is recognized by the school's international accreditations. Its members are key players in the scientific community, but they also put their expertise at the service of society through numerous institutions (Singapore Parliament, Competition Authority, Financial Markets Authority, OECD, etc.) and by participating in public debate. The department's professors specialize in a wide range of fields (international trade, industrial economics, monetary and financial economics, information theory, etc.), with a constant focus on the major economic challenges facing the world today (new trends in international trade, climate change issues, analysis of digital markets, impact of inflation, evolution of the healthcare systems, etc.). Both the research and training offered by the department reflect the importance attached to these themes. In this way, the members of the department contribute to the understanding, for our students and for society as a whole, of the major contemporary economic issues.
Research
The Economics Department aims to produce innovative studies with a strong societal and organizational impact, based on the latest methodological developments. Department members' research is organized around two main themes:
- Industrial organization, theoretical and applied microeconomics
- International economics and monetary macroeconomics
Professors in the Department of Economics publish their work in scientific journals such as Economic Journal, Games and Economic Behavior, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Economic Theory, Journal of the European Economic Association, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, Management Science, Quarterly journal of Economics, Rand Journal of Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, etc.
They regularly take part in major international conferences and organize specialized lectures and seminars at ESSEC.
Professors in the Economics Department are affiliated with the ThEMA Applied Microeconomics Research Center (UMR 8184 CNRS - UCP). In addition to geographical proximity, the Economics Department shares common interests with ThEMA researchers, notably in industrial economics, applied game theory, labor market analysis, international economics and monetary and banking economics. ThEMA and the Department of Economics jointly organize the weekly seminar in Economic Analysis, Econometrics and Finance (AEEF).
ESSEC's Economics Department is a major partner of the Labex MME-DII , actively contributing to its research program by organizing conferences and seminars, and implementing research projects.
The department is also active within ISITE Paris-Seine. The ESSEC PhD economics program, developed in partnership with the University of Cergy Pontoise, welcomes 3-4 new PhD students every year. Graduates of the PhD program go on to pursue careers as research professors in France and abroad, with high-quality placements (e.g. Bocconi, Trinity College, University College Dublin, Central Bank of Israel, etc.).
Teaching
Following in the long tradition of ESSEC, founded in 1901 as the “Ecole Supérieure de Sciences Economiques et Commerciales”, the department pursues its mission of providing students and continuing education participants with a solid foundation of knowledge in economics. The Economics Department offers introductory courses in macroeconomics and microeconomics for all ESSEC programs. Master's students are required to take a core course in managerial economics, which provides advanced knowledge of industrial organization, market analysis and corporate strategy.
The department also offers optional in-depth courses in more applied areas of specialization, or those that promote understanding of major societal issues: international economics, digital economics, banking economics, environmental economics, labor economics, growth economics, health economics, business analysis, game theory, etc.
In the Master in Management program, the Department of Economics proposes a track organized around a range of courses in economics and related disciplines such as econometrics. Each year, this track attracts students motivated by a career in economics research, or looking for high-level positions in economic administration or international organizations. These students can work with the professors of the Department on research projects, and have priority for teaching assistant missions.
